Sue’s November 2010 Newsletter I always wanted to be somebody. I should have been more specific. Lily Tomlin JSJ For Self-Care Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient healing art that focuses on bringing the body into harmony and balance through the energy meridians, which are central to Chinese medicine. Each finger is associated with a meridian. From Delicious Living, February 2005: “By holding your fingers one at a time, for a few moments at a time, one can unload attitudes associated with the meridians,” says Debbie Ellman, a JSJ practitioner in Scottsdale, AZ. Wrap the fingers of one hand around each finger of the other hand, and release worry (thumb), fear (index), anger and frustration (middle), sadness (ring), and trying or pretense (pinky.) To learn more about JSJ, read the 6-page self-care book at: http://www.jsjinc.net/jsj/ups/web-articles/haar%20all1.pdf
BodyTalk Testimonial Is it time for you to come in for a BodyTalk session?
From Jutta Batke, MD, Berlin, Germany:
“Last weekend I was traveling by train when my attention was caught by a co-traveler who was having a seizure at one of the stations. His family, which were also on the train, told me later the man was well over 80 yrs. old and had suffered from epilepsy for almost 40 years, which had been medicinally “contained/controlled.” I work as an emergency medical doctor, so I know the symptoms. He was unresponsive, with a fixed gaze and swallowing reflexes. Other travelers had put out an emergency call and quite automatically I gave him a Cortices Treatment. After the first run through, he collapsed, lying on the ground. During the second run--no more convulsions – and during the third run, he came to, stood up and was totally there. I have never seen that kind of reaction!
“His family told me that usually he remains quite dazed—even after milder episodes, feels disoriented, speaks dialect and needs 20-30 minutes to recover. He boarded the train again and the emergency car could leave again. It also seems that in the hours following the incident, no new convulsions occurred. It is just fine!”
I hope you’re tapping out your Cortices every day. It should be part of your daily schedule, just like brushing your teeth! Forgot the steps? Ask me to show you next time you come for an appointment, or watch this short video and tap along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYk7V4BxP-U&feature=related
Jumpstart Your Neti Pot I heard on the radio today that Ragweed is on its way out, but trace amounts of Cedar are already showing up in pollen counts. If you have allergies or a cold, the Neti Pot can bring quick relief. Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends putting a drop of peppermint essential oil into a nasal spray of salt water. "Peppermint is a decongestant. If you just inhale peppermint, it opens your airways up a bit," said Oz. If you use Young Living Essential Oils, like me, one drop in a nasal spray is way too powerful. Instead, pop the plastic inner lid off of the bottle and dip a toothpick into the peppermint oil. Swirl the toothpick in your Neti Pot water before using. Wash out your sinuses, open up your airways and reduce bacteria—naturally.
Rolfing Structural Integration—commonly called “Rolfing,” was invented by Dr. Ida Rolfe. A type of bodywork, Rolfing involves manipulation of connective tissue to improve imbalances in posture and alignment that lead to pain and discomfort. It’s popularity is on the rise, and with good reason. It works. Read a recent article about Rolfing at: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/07/fashion/07rolfing.html If you’re interested in finding a good Rolfer, call me for a referral.
Fiber Options Women can become constipated during pregnancy due to changes in hormone levels and pressure on the bowels. Many obstetricians suggest over-the-counter fiber supplements or prescribe stool softeners for their expectant patients. One simple, natural solution is to eat two prunes (dried plums) each day, adding an additional 6 grams of fiber to your diet. And/or add a pear, which contains 5 grams. The recipe for one of my favorite high-fiber snacks when I was pregnant is below: Applesauce Muffins Preheat oven to 350°. Grease muffin pan. In a large bowl, mix: 1 ¼ c wheat germ 1 ¼ c quick or old-fashioned oats, uncooked 1 c flour ½ c packed brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt
In a medium bowl, combine: ¾ c unsweetened applesauce ½ c melted butter 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla
With wooden spoon, stir applesauce mixture into flour mixture just until flour is moistened (batter will be lumpy.) Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake 13-17 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of muffin comes out clean. Remove muffins from pan. Serve warm or allow to cool. Makes 12.

Chi Machine November Special: $399 + Free Shipping Below you’ll see what the Chi Machine can do for students with ADD/ADHD. Diane Augustin, a school nurse in Nebraska, shared the following:
Time On-Task Comparison—Before & After Using the Chi Machine Two first-grade female students were observed before using the Chi Machine, then a second observation took place after several weeks of using the Chi Machine each morning at school for six minutes. The observations were done during an interactive reading/writing exercise to provide consistency for this comparison.
Initial Observation, 1st student: mostly played with pencil, writing on chair, sitting with back to teacher at times, gently poking adjacent student, moving about in chair, minimal eye-contact with teacher and looking around. Percentage of time student on task: 37%, class on task 75%. 2nd Observation 8 Weeks Later: Played with pencil intermittently, but did not sit with back to teacher, sat quietly in seat, had more eye contact with teacher, did not disturb student next to her. Percentage of time student on task: 67%, class on task 65%.
Initial Observation, 2nd student: Student had minimal eye-contact with teacher, would look away, play with hair. Could only attend for a few seconds at a time during work time, drawing a line of green grass across the papr rather than drawing the five characters from the story as instructed. Played with eraser, stood up, visited with nearby students, gazed at nothing in particular. Percentage of time student on task: 36%, class on task 72%. 2nd Observation 6 Weeks Later: Similar off-task behavior, but this time she could remain on task for longer periods of time during independent work time. Percentage of time student on task: 77%, class on task 75%.
Conclusion: Use of the Chi Machine resulted in increased time on task by these students of 30% and 40% respectively. The speech pathologist commented that if she didn’t know better, she would think the second student was on medication by the difference seen in her ability to attend over the last few weeks since using the Chi Machine.
Would you like to experience the Chi Machine? Give me a call and ask to borrow one for a week. You’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes. (210) 415-5766
Cheap & Green To protect your clothes and linens from moths: 1) Hang a few bunches of fragrant dried herbs—such as sage, lavender, eucalyptus or peppermint—in your closets. Replace the herbs every two months. 2) Put a drop of lavender or patchouli essential oils on a cotton ball and place near the clothes in your closet.
Something to think about: “If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to, no one with which to share the beauty of the stars, to laugh with, to touch, what would be your purpose in life? It is other life, it is love, which gives your life meaning. This is harmony. We must discover the joy of each other, the joy of challenge, the joy of growth.” Mitsugi Saotome
