Have You Had Your Walnuts Today? *The British Journal of Nutrition reports that an ounce of walnuts per day (7-9 nuts) fends off age-related degeneration of cognitive and motor abilities. *According to the American Journal of Nutrition, walnuts reduce total cholesterol and LDL levels without promoting weight gain. *The omega-3 fatty acids and other components in walnuts significantly decrease breast tumor incidence, the number of glands with a tumor and the tumor size in mice. The effective human dose? Two ounces per day. *Walnuts reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Source: Psychology Today, December 2009
Cortices and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) From the October 2, 2009 IBA Newsletter, Paul Lavender of Switzerland shares the following: “I’d suffered from IBS for about 5 years, with constantly fluctuating diarrhea, constipation and bloating. Despite parasite and allergy tests, no obvious cause was found. I’d learnt to control this to some extent by cutting out coffee, beer and wheat. “When I attended a talk by John Veltheim, he showed the audience how to do the Cortices technique on themselves, and immediately I noticed I was breathing more deeply. Over the next few days I noticed my IBS symptoms had cleared up and I could now eat/drink pretty much anything without adverse reactions. Nearly 2 months later, I would say I’m 90% recovered.” Are you tapping out your Cortices daily? Massage Improves Balance in the Elderly French researchers concluded in a report in the May 7 issue of Manual Therapies, that massage improves both agility and balance in the elderly. Their randomized, placebo-controlled study examined 28 patients aged 65-95. They evaluated how massage and joint mobilization of the feet and ankles affected clinical balance performances using three tests. Balance improved significantly in just a single session.
Chi Machine Testimonials: Last month I spoke with a woman named Joyce about the benefits of using the Sun Ancon Chi Machine. She shared the following with me:

- A couple Joyce knows tried out the Chi Machine. The husband was planning to put his wife in a nursing home because he could no longer care for her. She had severe Fibromyalgia. The wife used the Chi Machine daily. Today, she has no pain and rides her bike 15-20 miles per day, weather permitting.

Tai Chi for OA Researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine have determined that patients over 65 years of age with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who engage in regular Tai Chi exercise improve physical function and experience less pain. Tai Chi (Chuan) is a traditional style of Chinese martial arts that features slow, rhythmic movements to induce mental relaxation and enhance balance, strength, flexibility and self-efficacy. Full findings of the study are published in the November issue of Arthritis Care & Research, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology. Something to think about: “A woman is running from tigers. She runs and she runs, and the tigers are getting closer and closer. She comes to the edge of a cliff. She sees a vine there, so she climbs down and holds on to it. Then she looks down and sees that there are tigers below her as well. At the same time, she notices a little mouse gnawing away at the vine to which she is clinging. She also sees a beautiful little bunch of strawberries emerging from a nearby clump of grass. She looks up, she looks down, and she looks at the mouse. Then she picks a strawberry, pops it in her mouth, and enjoys it thoroughly. “Tigers above, tigers below. This is the predicament we are always in. We are born and sooner or later we die. Each moment is just what it is. Resentment, bitterness and holding a grudge prevent us from seeing and hearing and tasting and delighting. This might be the only moment of our life, this might be the only strawberry we’ll ever eat. We could feel depressed about this or we could finally appreciate it. We could delight in the preciousness of every single moment.” From Comfortable With Uncertainty, by Pema Chodron Feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone you feel will be interested in its content.
