We Are All Sponges
Sometimes during a BodyTalk session, I may tap out an emotion that is stuck somewhere in a client’s body. Below is a terrific explanation for these stuck emotions from Linda Thursby, of the UK:
“Compare yourself to a sponge. I know it’s a bit far fetched, but we are all sponges in life, we absorb things and reject things.
“I had to come up with a simple way of explaining emotional releasing so that a child could understand right through to a 90 year old.
“I am a sponge and I suddenly am immersed in a bucket of water. This bucket represents a situation in life, either giving birth, a car accident, a row with a loved one or an illness. When I come out of the bucket, water will drip out of the sponge, like the emotions and thoughts that fall away, but some still remains and this is the emotion that I still cannot get my head round or my body will not accept has happened. The body then decides to hide it somewhere in the body and hopefully forget it is there.
“Time goes by and the body starts to react to this emotion that has been “hidden”, like the immune system does with viruses.”
Osteopenia
Osteopenia is the slight normal thinning of the bones that begins occurring in women after the age of 30. The international group of Osteoporosis experts who gave it a name “never imagined that people would come to think of osteopenia as a disease in itself to be treated.” If you have been diagnosed with Osteopenia after a bone scan and are taking a medication for it, you may want to follow this link for “the story of how the definition of what constitutes a disease evolves, and the role that drug companies can play in that evolution”: How A Bone Disease Grew To Fit The Prescription.

What Should Be Happening When We Sleep?
A colleague of mine summarized some of the biochemical/hormonal benefits of good sleep hygiene. Most of the information is from Lights Out, by T.S. Wiley:
Sufficient sleep/“time spent in the dark” allows the following processes to take place:
Conversion of the day’s Serotonin to Melatonin (Note: if Serotonin is not converted to Melatonin, the Serotonin levels rise too high, causing feelings of stress and hopelessness; elevated Serotonin also dulls memory and one’s ability to think clearly/plan. Also: if Serotonin is high, then Dopamine will be low, resulting in depression.).
After several hours of Melatonin production, Melatonin (a potent anti-oxidant and sex hormone regulator, has many other functions as well) gets converted to Prolactin.
Prolactin enhances production of T and Natural Killer cells: the first line of cancer defense.
The BIGGEST problem with chronic sleep deficiency is that “long days” trigger carbohydrate cravings, which causes Insulin levels to stay higher than normal into the night (instead of becoming flat); also, Cortisol levels fall later than they should (instead of early in the sleep cycle.). The Cortisol levels then do not rise sufficiently by morning, and we NEED rising Cortisol in the morning or we will awaken feeling exhausted.
Without this rise in Cortisol, you will not have enough Dopamine (and then you will feel depressed). Too much Insulin and Serotonin also suppress Dopamine. Dopamine helps you think clearly.
Without Dopamine to enhance Cortisol, your time perception changes, and you feel as if you never have enough time (making you want to stay up late…).
There is a lot more, having to do with homocystein production/heart damage/cancer…
But the bottom line is:
Go to bed early, especially in the winter, and balance your light/dark cycles. This is the first, best (and cheapest) place to start in the project of balancing hormones.
